Q) I need a computer to run my new franchise. Is it better
to purchase the latest version, or should I look for other features.
A) Generally a last generation computer will perform well
for most office functions. Some
of the most popular office software
packages
available will run well on first generation Intel Pentium/AMD K5
grade processors. Although
we are programmed to want the fastest or newest in technology, the
speed at which computers that are currently on the market operate
is sufficient to run not only the franchisees business but the franchiser
as well. What is important is selecting the appropriate hardware
to run the required software. Be sure that you know your software
requirements before selecting the computer that it will run on.
Q) What type of telephone equipment and internet connection
should I purchase?
A) That obviously will depend on the type of business you
are in. However telephone rates are coming down for both local and
long distance carriers, and you can (in most areas) choose from
a fairly large group. One technique is to tell them in writing what
you want and let them bid against each other, this way you maintain
control instead of getting into their slanted sales scheme. As to
internet hook-ups. that is also dependant on the type of business
you run but in most cases a DSL or cable modem will supply ample
connection speed for multiple computers in most applications.
Q) Can I find better pricing on the internet or at the local
office equipment store?
A) It will depend on the item but generally the prices are
competitive. It won't hurt on larger items to check on line, but
for paperclips and the like its not worth the trouble.
Q) Should I buy name brand verses a company that I have never
heard of, but carries a lower price.
A) There is a saying in business that the guarantee is only
as good as the company that gives it. It is a dangerous but obviously
compelling scenario to consider price only but in the long run you
may pay a price for this decision.
