Want your business to stand out? Win a local competition.
Okay, so you can’t really win a real Oscar for your local business, but communities often hold competitions for different types of businesses.
These come in many varieties. If you want your business to build local acclaim, search out and compete for recognition within your business’ category. Local residents will take notice and your business could benefit from the increased positive notoriety.
Media companies such as local newspapers or television stations often produce a local competition. These events have the advantage of significant exposure due to the fact that a large media company is promoting their own event.
Memhis in May International Festival hosts the World Champion Barbeque Cooking Contest. If you open a restaurant, virtually any type of restaurant, you could compete in one of the various categories such as Whole Hog Entry, Pork Shoulder, Pork Rib and non-pork categories of Beef, Poultry, Seafood, and Exotic. Even Sauce and Hot Wings have their own categories. Winning a category or perhaps even just entering and placing could win local visitors to your restaurant.
The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association hosts the OBIE Awards (named after their oblisk shape) and awards such categories as Builder of the Year, Best Building Design, and Best Residential Remodeling to name a few. Winners for the categories of landscaping and Best Community are also selected.
With many sub-categories, if your business participates in the building sector, your local area may have a similar competition for you to enter your business in.
The online review site Yelp even has a ranking called Best of Yelp for the category Auto Repair. In Kansas City, Missouri the #1 business in this category is Venus Automotive Body Shop.
Make your business stand out by discovering a local competition in your relevant business category. Enter and do your best to elevate the visibility of your business in your community.
